You spent the day shaking hands, trading business cards, and having great conversations. Then Monday arrives, the inbox fills up, and those connections quietly fade.

It happens to almost everyone. But the real value of a conference comes after it ends. With a simple plan, you can turn a single event into weeks of relationships, content, and new opportunities.

Follow up within 48 hours

The sooner you reach out, the more likely people are to remember you. Aim to follow up within two days while the conversation is still fresh.

Keep it personal. Mention something specific you talked about, like a challenge they shared or a session you both attended. A short, genuine note beats a generic “great to meet you” every time.

Connect on LinkedIn at the same time. It keeps you visible in their feed long after the event is over.

Share what you learned

Every conference is a content goldmine. Within a week, share a recap on your social channels and your blog:

  • Photos from the event, tagging the organizers, speakers, and people you met
  • Two or three key takeaways from the sessions that resonated most
  • A thank-you to the hosts and sponsors who made it happen

Recaps do double duty. They show your network that you’re active in your industry, and they give the people you met a reason to engage with you again.

We’ll be doing exactly this after the Dealmaker’s Conference this month, and again after BEN Colorado.

Make sure your website is ready for visitors

Here’s something many people miss: after meeting you, most new contacts will look you up. Your website becomes your second first impression.

Before your next event, ask yourself:

  • Does your homepage clearly explain what you do and who you help?
  • Is it easy to book a call or get in touch?
  • Does the site look good and load quickly on a phone?
  • Are there testimonials or case studies that build trust?

If the answer to any of these is no, a great conversation can end with a disappointing click.

Plan your next event before this one ends

The best event marketers treat conferences as a year-round rhythm, not a one-off. Keep a simple list of upcoming events, who you want to meet, and what content you’ll share before, during, and after.

Promote your attendance ahead of time so your network knows where to find you. Then follow the same recap and follow-up process every time. Consistency is what turns a handful of handshakes into a reputation.
