Think about the last time you searched for something online. Chances are, you saw an AI-generated summary at the top of the page before any regular results. Or maybe you skipped the search engine altogether and asked an AI assistant directly.
Your customers are doing the same thing. And that changes what it takes to get found.
From ten blue links to one answer
Traditional search gave people a list of websites to choose from. AI search often gives them a single, summarized answer, sometimes with just a few sources mentioned.
That means the competition to be one of those sources is tougher. The good news is that the businesses that show up in AI answers are usually the ones doing the fundamentals well. This is sometimes called AI optimization, or AIO.
What helps AI tools find and trust you
Answer real questions clearly. AI tools look for content that directly answers what people are asking. Write pages and blog posts that address your customers’ actual questions in plain language, like “How much does a new website cost?” or “How long does SEO take to work?”
Keep your business information consistent. Your name, address, phone number, hours, and services should match everywhere they appear, from your website to your Google Business Profile to industry directories. Inconsistent details make it harder for AI tools to trust your information.
Build your reputation. Reviews, testimonials, and mentions on other trusted websites all signal that your business is credible. AI tools draw on these signals when deciding who to recommend.
Make your website easy to read, for people and machines. Clear headings, fast load times, a mobile-friendly design, and behind-the-scenes structured data all help AI tools understand what your business does and who it serves.
Show your expertise. Share what you know through blog posts, videos, podcasts, and case studies. Content that demonstrates real experience is more likely to be referenced than generic filler.
SEO isn’t dead. It’s evolving.
If you’ve invested in good SEO, you’re not starting over. Many of the same practices that help you rank on Google also help you appear in AI answers. The difference is that quality, clarity, and credibility matter more than ever, and shortcuts matter less.
