You can tell prospects your business is great. Or you can let the people you’ve already helped say it for you. The second one works better every time.
Most buyers read reviews before they ever call a business. A testimonial from a real client, with a real name and a real result, answers the question every prospect is quietly asking: “Will this work for someone like me?”
Yet many businesses collect a few kind words, drop them on a forgotten page, and never use them again. Here’s how to put them to work.
Ask at the right moment
The best time to ask for a testimonial is right after a win. That might be a website launch, a closed deal, or a project wrapping up on time. Your client is excited, and the details are fresh.
Make it easy for them. Instead of “Would you write us a review?”, ask two or three specific questions:
- What problem were you trying to solve when you found us?
- What was it like working with our team?
- What has changed since the project wrapped up?
Specific questions get specific answers. “They launched our site in three weeks and our inquiries doubled” is far more convincing than “Great company!”
Use them everywhere, not just one page
A single testimonials page is a start, but few visitors go looking for it. Place testimonials where decisions happen:
- Your homepage, near your main call to action
- Service pages, matched to the service the client used
- Contact and quote forms, where a prospect needs one last push
- Social media, as quote graphics or short video clips
- Proposals and email signatures, for a quiet vote of confidence
Video testimonials are especially powerful. Seeing and hearing a real person speak about their experience builds trust that text alone can’t match.
Let them help your search rankings
Testimonials aren’t just good for trust. They’re good for visibility too.
Google reviews are one of the strongest signals for local search. Businesses with a steady stream of recent, positive reviews tend to show up higher in the local map results. Encourage happy clients to leave a Google review, and respond to every review you receive, positive or negative.
On your website, testimonials add fresh, relevant content that naturally includes the words your clients use to describe you. Those are often the same words prospects type into search.
Keep the stream flowing
Treat testimonials as an ongoing habit, not a one-time project. Build a review request into your project wrap-up process. Rotate new testimonials into your website and social feeds regularly, so your proof always feels current.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing kind words from clients like McClanahan Associates, Ryan Weston, and Sandra V. Each one is a reminder of why we do this work.
